Coney Island and Brighton Beach

¿Recordais la película Big? ¿En esa en la que Tom Hanks se convertía de repente de niño a adulto por la magia de una máquina que leía la fortuna y a la que Tom Hanks le pedía ser "grande"?

Todavía no he visitado la tienda de juguetes FAO Scharwtz en la que toca el piano con los pies en un piano gigante pero si que he ido a Coney Island, el lugar en el que estaba la máquina mágica.

Coney Island se encuentra a una hora en tren aproximadamente desde Manhattan, es un sitio muuuuy americano y bastante popular.

La playa no es nada del otro mundo, pero en el se encuentra un parque de atracciones mítico, Astroland, que desgraciadamente cerrarán este año para que desaparezca de la faz de la tierra y construyan en sus terrenos.

Allí está la montaña rusa Cyclone, hecha de madera y la más antigua del mundo.

Antes de acercarse a la playa o a Astroland se puede hacer una parada en Nathan´s, donde todos los 4 de julio, Día de la Independencia, se celebra el campeonato mundial de perritos calientes. 12 minutos y todos los perritos calientes que te puedas comer, desde hace un montón de años está ganando un japonés llamado Kobayashi pero parece ser que tiene la mandíbula un poco averiada así que este año el concurso va a ser más emocionante.

Si andas por el paseo marítimo de Coney Island y pasas Astroland y el Aquarium, a unos 10 minutos está Brighton Beach, una playa menos concurrida. Este barrio es ruso y ukraniano así que todo está escrito en cirílico, hay muchísimas tiendas y es bastante interesante para ir a comer comida rusa. Si no tienes dinero para ir a Rusia, siempre te puedes dar una vuelta por aquí por lo que cuesta un billete de metro, ¡2 $!.

Y esto no tiene nada que ver con Coney Island o Brighton Beach pero de vuelta a casa hice escala por Williamsburg en Brooklyn y cuando lo vi por la calle me pareció tan divertido que decidí hacerle una foto.

I haven’t visited the FAO Schwarz toy store where he plays piano with his feet in a huge piano on the floor, but I have been to Coney Island, the place where that magic machine was.
Coney Island is one hour away from Manhattan by train, it is a veeeeery American place and very popular.
The beach is not especially good, but there is a mythic amusement park over there, Astroland, that unfortunately will be closed this year. It will disappear and in its place they will build.
There you can find the Cyclone roller coaster, made of wood and the oldest roller coaster in the world.
Before approaching the beach or Astroland, it is possible to stop at Nathan’s, where every 4th of July, Independence Day, it is held the hot dogs eating world championship. 12 minutes and all the hot dogs you are able to eat, since a long time has been winning a Japanese guy called Kobayashi, but, it seems that he has problems in his mouth so this year it is going to be interesting.
If you walk down Coney Island seaside and pass by Astroland and the Aquarium, 10 minutes walking distance is Brighton Beach, a less crowded beach. This is a Ukrainian and Russian neighborhood so everything is written in Cyrillic, there are a lot of stores and it is really interesting for eating Russian Food. If you don’t have money for traveling to Russia, you can always stroll here only for a subway ticket price, 2 $!

This has nothing to do with Coney Island or Brighton Beach but on the way home I stopped in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and saw it. I seemed so funny to me that I decided it deserved a picture.
